How many research grants have NAAR awarded to date?
A total of 272 awards have been made since 1997, including 78 mentor-based
fellowships.
Where does NAAR obtain the funds to support research?
NAAR's research funds are the direct result of generous donations from the community and our WALK FAR for NAAR walkathons.
Are all grants for a 2-year period?
The Interdisciplinary/Translational Research Award is a two-year grant, up to $150,000 per year. NAAR also supports both 1 and 2-year Biomedical Research Grants up to $60,000/year.
What are NAAR's funding guidelines?
Different programs have different funding guidelines. Please refer to individual RFPs for more details.
How do I apply?

How can I obtain the RFPs and funding-related announcements?
All RFPs and funding-related announcements are available from this site. You may also register with our Registry to be emailed related announcements as soon as they are available.
Can I receive a copy of last year's funding guidelines to ready myself for this year's proposal?
Since RFPs may change yearly, we do not distribute previous years' guidelines.
When are the funding decisions made?
The funding decisions are typically announced late June for Research Awards and early November for Fellowship Awards.
If I have been approved for funding, what is there a fund disbursement schedule?
Funds are disbursed on a semiannual basis, pending the timely submission of interim progress and financial reports. In general, fund installments are disbursed in August and January.
When can I expect the first fund disbursement?
Normally, the first check will be disbursed approximately 3 weeks from the date the Letter of Acceptance and all other pertinent documents are sent to the Grants Administrator.
Who will receive the check?
Typically, checks are sent to a financial remitter of the host institution who then disburses the funds.
How will I know the funds have been disbursed?
NAAR will send the PI a copy of the letter sent with the check to the remitter. This will alert the PI that the grant money has been disbursed.
What are the terms and conditions of funding?
Terms and conditions of funding may vary according to program. However, terms and conditions for the NAAR Research Awards and Mentor-based Fellowships can be found here.
What are the interim and final progress and financial reports?
Interim progress and financial reports are important for NAAR to monitor and track the status of funded projects. The progress report should be submitted by the PI, while the financial report should be submitted by Post-Award Official of the host institution. Final research and financial reports are also required at the termination of the project and are important to NAAR for assessing the accomplishments of the research project. For more details on the formats of these reports, please see NAAR Terms and Conditions of Funding.
Does NAAR support both pre- and post-doctoral fellowships?
Yes. Please see the Mentor-based Fellowship RFPs provided on this site.
What are the award amounts for each type of fellowship?
For pre-doctoral fellows, a stipend is offered with $4,000 research allowance, whereas for post doctoral fellows, a stipend plus $5,000 research allowance are provided. The amount of the stipend will be determined by NAAR according to fellow's level of training and professional experience.
How many fellowships are awarded annually?
Since award amount is dependent on fellow qualifications, the number of awards varies according to the total amount committed to NAAR's fellowship program on a yearly basis. In 2004, for instance, NAAR committed $1.1 million to the fellowship programs, resulting in 14 pre- and postdoctoral fellowships awarded.
